A Quarter-Century Power Deal Anchors Egypt's First Solar-Plus-Storage Hybrid at Nagaa Hammadi
Egypt's first solar-plus-storage hybrid at Nagaa Hammadi: 1.1 GW PV, 200 MWh BESS, USD 590M, 25-year PPA with EETC—advancing Vision 2030 renewables.
Research Desk
Egypt's first utility-scale hybrid facility combining solar generation with battery storage has taken shape at Nagaa Hammadi, backed by a USD 590 million investment and a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC). The Obelisk Solar PV and BESS Project pairs 1.1 GW of solar capacity with a 100 MW / 200 MWh Battery Energy Storage System, securing its offtake through the long-term agreement with the national transmission company.
Financing Behind the Development
The project is led by Scatec ASA, working with Norfund and EDF power solutions. On the financing side, the effort draws on global partners including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the African Development Bank Group, and BII. The development is also framed within the Nexus of Water, Food and Energy (NWFE) platform, an international cooperation framework identified in the post as part of the financing and partnership structure supporting the initiative.
How the Storage System Works
At the core of the storage component is Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistry, described in the post as safe and thermally stable. The battery system is intended to firmly dispatch power during peak evening demand periods, when solar output alone cannot meet consumption needs. Beyond shifting generation to high-demand hours, the facility is expected to strengthen grid resilience by helping to mitigate short-duration outages and regulate grid frequency.
Generation Targets and Emissions Avoided
Once operational, the Obelisk Project is designed to produce more than 3,000 GWh of clean electricity annually. That output is expected to prevent 1.5 million tons of CO₂ emissions each year.
Alignment with National Policy
The initiative is positioned as a direct contribution to Egypt's Vision 2030 goal of achieving a 42% renewable energy mix. By integrating dispatchable green power into the national grid, the project adds a form of renewable capacity that can be relied upon when needed, rather than generation that varies with weather conditions alone.
The Case for Cross-Border Partnerships
The post underscores that cross-border cooperation and utility-scale battery storage deployment are intended to ensure renewable power is available when the national grid needs it most. The collaboration among Scatec ASA, Norfund, and EDF power solutions — supported by the EBRD, the African Development Bank Group, and BII — is presented as an example of strategic international collaboration delivering high-tech infrastructure for sustainable development in Egypt.
