Alpex Solar Inaugurates G12R TOPCon Cell Factory in Mathura as India Pushes Domestic Manufacturing
Alpex Solar opens a 2.2GW G12R TOPCon solar cell factory in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, boosting India's domestic solar manufacturing capacity.
Research Desk
Alpex Solar has added a major facility to India's solar manufacturing base, opening a dedicated solar cell plant in Kosi Kotwan, Mathura district, Uttar Pradesh, with a nameplate capacity of 2.2 gigawatts.
Location and Manufacturing Focus
The new plant is situated in Kosi Kotwan, a location within the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, a state that has attracted increasing interest from industrial investors in recent years. Alpex Solar, which operates as an Indian solar photovoltaic module manufacturer, built the facility to produce G12R TOPCon solar cells.
TOPCon, short for Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact, is an advanced cell architecture that manufacturers have been adopting for its higher efficiency outputs relative to earlier solar cell technologies. Alpex Solar has described this cell format as third-generation technology.
Scale of the Facility
At 2.2 gigawatts of nameplate capacity, the Mathura plant positions itself among the larger dedicated solar cell manufacturing facilities operating in India. The scale of the installation reflects the broader domestic effort to build out cell-level manufacturing capacity, a segment where India has historically depended on imports to keep pace with rapid growth in solar installations across the country.
How the Announcement Was Made
Alpex Solar disclosed the inauguration through a regulatory filing submitted to the National Stock Exchange of India on September 4, 2026. The filing was made under Regulation 30 of the SEBI Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements Regulations, 2015, which requires listed companies to publicly disclose material developments. The company also indicated that the announcement would be published on its corporate announcements website. The inauguration itself was scheduled for September 16, 2026.
Information Still Pending
Several significant details about the project remained undisclosed at the time of the regulatory filing. The filing did not include a commercial production start date, leaving unanswered the question of when the facility will begin supplying cells at operational scale. The total capital investment associated with constructing and equipping the plant was also not revealed in the filing, and those figures had not been made public as of that date.
