GP Joule Passes Consented 200 MW Blackhall Solar Project to Elgin in $223.84 Million Play in Ireland

Blackhall Solar Farm, a consented solar development of roughly 200 MW located in County Meath, has changed hands. Elgin, a fully integrated, utility-scale solar and storage Independent Power Producer (IPP), has completed its purchase of the site from developer GP Joule. The project arrives as a late-stage asset with grid connection arrangements already secured, and its acquisition materially expands Elgin's late-stage Irish development pipeline.

GP Joule Reflects on the Handover

For the outgoing developer, the transaction closes a chapter that began years before construction will ever start.

Ciaran Donnelly, Managing Director at GP Joule, said, "We are pleased to have completed the sale of Blackhall Solar Farm to Elgin. Our team has taken the project from its early development stages, through planning and development, to this point, and completing the sale marks an important milestone for GP Joule Projects Ireland and everyone involved. From the outset, we have worked closely with the local community, and we are proud of the work that has gone into bringing Blackhall to this stage. We look forward to seeing Elgin take the project forward into its next phase and ultimately into operation."

Elgin Commits Around USD 223.84 Million

The new owner does not intend to stop at acquisition. Elgin expects to invest approximately USD 223.84 million in the development and construction of Blackhall Solar Farm, an outlay the company describes as a long-term investment in Ireland's energy infrastructure that supports the transition to a more secure, affordable, and sustainable electricity system.

Elgin Chief Executive Dermot Kelleher framed the deal in similarly broad terms: "Blackhall is one of the largest late-stage solar development opportunities in the Irish market and represents a significant addition to Elgin's Irish platform. As we continue to grow our portfolio of owned renewable energy assets, projects like Blackhall will play an important role in supporting Ireland's decarbonisation ambitions, energy security, and long-term economic growth."

A Ticket to the RESS Auction

Beyond the balance sheet, the purchase increases the capacity Elgin can bring to the upcoming Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (RESS) auction. The company expects the project to play an important role in supporting Ireland's renewable energy ambitions, its energy security objectives, and the growing demand for clean electricity.

150 MW Already Moving Toward Energisation

Blackhall is not Elgin's only active commitment in the Irish market. The company is currently finalising the construction and energisation of approximately 150 MW of solar projects in Ireland under a previously announced portfolio transaction. Elgin says this work further demonstrates its ability to originate, develop, finance, and deliver utility-scale renewable energy infrastructure.

Who Is Elgin

Elgin develops, builds, owns, and operates renewable energy assets across the UK, Ireland, and Italy. Its pipeline exceeds 10 GW across solar and battery storage projects, and the company manages assets across the full value chain, from origination and development through construction, energisation and long-term optimisation.

To date, Elgin has delivered over 1GW of ready-to-build projects, with more than 300MW currently under construction across the UK and Ireland.

Established in 2009, the company employs 130 professionals across offices in Dublin, London, Rome, and beyond. Elgin is backed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), which acquired a majority stake in 2024 and supports the company's long-term growth ambition.
