Sonnedix has started operations at two hybrid solar and battery projects in northern Portugal, in what the company says are its first large-scale hybrid solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage installations to come online anywhere in the world. The two plants, Sonnedix Acail and Sonnedix Felgueiras, are also the first hybrid projects in Portugal to begin operating while connected to the national distribution grid.
Combined capacity of more than 68MW and 140MWh
The two sites together deliver more than 68MW of solar photovoltaic capacity and more than 140MWh of storage. Sonnedix Acail accounts for 28.3MWp of PV and 60.2MWh of battery energy storage, while Sonnedix Felgueiras comprises 39.9MWp of PV and 80.3MWh of BESS. The storage systems were built alongside their respective solar plants within the same fenced perimeter.
Sonnedix states that this integrated method optimised construction while preserving the surrounding landscape and required no additional land. Both battery systems are now running in hybrid mode with full grid charging capacity.
Hybridisation strategy takes shape
For Sonnedix, the entry into operation of the two plants represents a landmark step in its global hybridisation strategy and shows its evolution as a Next-Gen IPP. The company defines that model as centred on industrial customers and the delivery of integrated energy solutions that combine generation, storage, trading and advanced energy management. Gregorio Morales, Chief Commercial Officer of Sonnedix, said: "Storage is fundamental to our evolution as a Next-Gen IPP. By combining solar generation and batteries, we turn renewable energy into a more flexible, predictable product adapted to our customers' needs.
Sonnedix Acail and Sonnedix Felgueiras are the first step of a global strategy that will enable us to offer increasingly sophisticated energy solutions aligned with real market demand." Paulo Pimentel, Director of Sonnedix Portugal, added: "The completion and commissioning of Acail and Felgueiras marks a milestone for Sonnedix in Portugal. These projects reflect the evolution of our portfolio towards hybrid solutions capable of providing greater flexibility to the system and promoting a more efficient integration of renewable energy. With this progress, we continue to consolidate our long-term commitment to Portugal and to the communities in which we operate."
Banking first for hybrid transactions
In March 2026, Sonnedix announced the financing of both projects, becoming one of the first structured transactions with commercial banks in Portugal for hybrid solar generation and battery storage facilities.
Renewables context in Portugal
The commissioning of the two plants arrives during a strong push for storage in Portugal, which Sonnedix describes as a key element for integrating renewables and providing flexibility to the electricity system. In January 2026, Portugal reached 80.7% renewable generation, the highest share in the European Union. According to the company, this demonstrates the critical role flexible assets will play in sustaining and accelerating that progress.
Global portfolio
Sonnedix is a global renewable energy company with a total portfolio capacity of close to 12GW, including more than 1GW under construction, 5GW in operation and a development pipeline exceeding 5GW.
The company supplies 100% clean electricity directly to customers through a diversified portfolio of solar, wind and storage assets, and operates in Chile, France, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom. It continues to expand its presence in OECD countries through organic and inorganic growth.
