Tokyo Century Acquires 50% Stake in egg Power’s 212 MW UK Solar and Wind Portfolio in the UK
Tokyo Century acquires a 50% stake in egg Power's 212MW UK solar and wind projects, with plans for further joint renewable energy investments.
Research Desk
Japanese infrastructure investor Tokyo Century has agreed to take a half share in three UK renewable energy projects owned by egg Power, the clean energy infrastructure business of Liberty Global.
The strategic investment agreement covers assets with a combined capacity of 212MW and includes a commitment by both parties to look at further joint investments.
What Tokyo Century Is Buying
Under the agreement, Tokyo Century will acquire a 50% stake in three projects from egg Power's portfolio. The assets are the Grange and Rag Lane solar projects as well as the Chirmorie Wind Farm. Together they represent 212 MW of capacity.
According to the announcement, each of the three projects already has long-term power purchase agreements in place. The companies holding those agreements include Virgin Media O2 and Amazon, both of which were named as examples.
The deal is not limited to the three assets. The two companies said they will explore opportunities to jointly invest in additional ready-to-build renewable energy assets across the UK and in other markets.
Where the Proceeds Will Go
Proceeds from the sale of the stakes in Grange, Rag Lane, and Chirmorie will be reinvested into growing egg Power's portfolio.
That capital sits alongside USD 532.84 million of non-recourse financing that egg Power secured from NatWest earlier this year. The financing is intended to support continued expansion of the company's portfolio of ready-to-build renewable energy projects.
Comments From egg Power
Ilesh Patel, who leads the egg Power business at Liberty Global, called the investment a strong endorsement of the value and quality of the business egg Power is building.
He said the company was delighted to welcome Tokyo Century to the egg Power family and looked forward to building on the agreements signed to create one of Europe's leading renewable energy and storage platforms.
Patel said the platform is focused on the growing demand from digital infrastructure, telcos, and other large energy-intensive companies. He added that the two companies share a vision and values.
In his words, their combined experience would bring more solar, wind, and battery projects online, strengthening energy resilience in their markets while delivering economic benefits to communities.
Tokyo Century's Growth Strategy
Toshihiro Nakanishi, a Director at Tokyo Century, said the firm was delighted to partner with egg Power and Liberty Global on the initiative.
He explained that, in line with Tokyo Century's Medium-Term Management Plan 2030, the company has identified its overseas renewable energy business as a key strategic growth area.
Nakanishi said Tokyo Century would draw on the insights and experience gained from its investments in solar and onshore wind power assets in the UK, Italy, and other markets to drive further expansion across its overseas renewable energy portfolio.
He said the company remains committed to enhancing its local operational frameworks and working alongside business partners with deep industry expertise to expand that portfolio.
He also linked the move to Tokyo Century's corporate purpose, "Shaping Our Blue Planet," saying the company will continue to contribute to the wider adoption of clean energy and the creation of a sustainable, decarbonised society.
