UrbanChain and Blackfinch Energy have entered a two-way energy partnership covering electricity purchased from two Welsh solar farms and power supplied across Blackfinch's portfolio elsewhere in Great Britain.
The agreements cover approximately 59GWh of contracted renewable generation from the Llwyndyrus and Bryngolwg solar farms, according to UrbanChain. In the other direction, UrbanChain supplies electricity to 24 half-hourly import meters across Blackfinch's portfolio in England, Scotland and Wales. Combined, the two solar farms are expected to produce around 15GWh of renewable electricity a year, roughly 28 times the electricity demand of Blackfinch's 24-site supply portfolio.
How the agreements unfolded
The relationship started in April 2026, when Llwyndyrus Solar Farm joined UrbanChain's private energy market under a two-year agreement. Bryngolwg is set to follow in April 2027 under a five-year deal.
UrbanChain's supply side of the arrangement, when it began delivering electricity across Blackfinch's wider portfolio, covering approximately 545MWh of annual demand in nine electricity distribution regions.
The generation sites
Llwyndyrus Solar Farm sits near Pwllheli on the Llŷn Peninsula in Gwynedd, North Wales. It has an installed capacity of around 6MW and generates sufficient electricity to power approximately 1,350 Welsh homes each year.
Market structure and regulation
To implement the arrangement, UrbanChain drew on its status as a licensed energy supplier to build a structure that captures the benefits of P442, an electricity market rule change that allows qualifying licence-exempt supply to be identified separately through the industry settlement system.
The agreements include payment guarantees, compliance commitments and protections against future regulatory changes. According to UrbanChain, this gives Blackfinch a legally verified route to secure additional value from the electricity its assets generate.
What the companies said
Tyler Gingell, senior PPA originator at UrbanChain, said the relationship with Blackfinch had grown within six months from a single generation agreement into a broad partnership spanning renewable generation and energy supply across Great Britain.
He noted that the company now purchases power from Blackfinch's solar assets while supplying electricity across its wider portfolio, describing it as an example of the more connected energy market UrbanChain is building, in which renewable generation and commercial demand can be brought together more efficiently.
Sam Dickerson, senior commercial portfolio manager at Blackfinch Energy, said working with UrbanChain reflects the firm's commitment to finding innovative, practical solutions that support the long-term performance of its assets and contribute to the continued growth of renewable energy across the UK.
