Northern Solar Secures 189 MW Solar and Battery Supply Deals for Data Centers Under CRESS in Malaysia
Northern Solar wins two CRESS awards to supply 189MW of solar and battery storage to data centres, boosting its shift to recurring income and renewable ass
Research Desk
Northern Solar Holdings Bhd has received two letters of award to supply renewable energy to data centre projects, covering solar facilities with a combined generation capacity of 189 megawatts (MW) alongside battery storage systems.
The awards were granted to the group's wholly owned subsidiary, Northern Solar Assets Sdn Bhd, under the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS), according to filings with Bursa Malaysia made on Monday, Nov 2.
What the two projects involve
The larger of the two is a 100 MW solar facility paired with a battery energy storage system (BESS), which will supply a data centre consuming 262.8 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per year. The second project comprises an 89 MW solar facility, likewise fitted with BESS, serving a data centre with an annual demand of 233.89 million kWh.
Taken together, the two data centres require roughly 496.69 million kWh of electricity annually.
Northern Solar anticipates that the projects will contribute positively to its earnings and net assets per share over their execution period.
Awarding parties remain unnamed
Neither the value of the contracts nor the identities of the parties granting the awards were revealed, with the company citing confidentiality.
It disclosed only that the first award was issued by a Malaysian company engaged in property investment and data centre infrastructure, and that the second came from the Malaysian subsidiary of a Singapore-headquartered data centre services operator.
Commencement dates for both projects have not been fixed, and the group said further announcements would follow once definitive agreements are signed.
Fitting into the group's asset ownership strategy
The awards arrive as Northern Solar works to move beyond its core solar engineering and construction activities and take ownership of renewable energy assets.
In September, Apex Securities reported that the group was finalising details on a potential 170 MW solar-plus-storage project under CRESS, seen as a way to speed up its shift towards recurring income from long-term electricity supply agreements.
The company has not clarified whether the newly announced awards are connected to that previously flagged project.
A year of contract wins
The latest announcement extends a run of contract successes during the year.
In October, the group secured a USD 8.35 million contract to develop a 9.5 MW large-scale solar photovoltaic plant, which lifted its total contract wins for the year to USD 37.68 million at that point. Its unbilled order book stood at USD 46.50 million as of end-June 2026.
Main Market move and market reaction
Northern Solar moved its listing from Bursa Malaysia's ACE Market to the Main Market on Oct 6.
On Monday, its shares closed 3.54%, lower at USD 0.27, giving the group a market capitalisation of USD 105.93 million.
