Harvey Hanna and King Energy Plan 19 MW Rooftop Solar Rollout Across Eight Sites in Delaware, US

A partnership announced on October 28, 2026 by Harvey Hanna & Associates and King Energy will bring more than 19 megawatts of rooftop community solar to eight Harvey Hanna properties in New Castle County, Delaware.

The Newport-based commercial real estate developer, owner, and manager will convert more than 1.8 million square feet of existing commercial rooftops into solar generation sites under the arrangement, which the companies describe as one of the largest community solar initiatives in the state.

Solar Portfolio Targets 25.4 Million kWh Annually

The portfolio, currently in development, is projected to reach more than 19.0 Megawatts Direct Current (MWdc) of capacity. When fully operational, the installations are expected to generate more than 25.4 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually and avoid an estimated 15.1 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

Using U.S. Environmental Protection Agency equivalency estimates, the companies calculate that emissions reduction is equivalent to taking approximately 1,598 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles off the road for a full year.

Flagship Installations Anchor the Portfolio

The eight properties, located in New Castle and Middletown, include three installations that stand out for their scale.

The largest is at Jamison Corner Road in New Castle, a 5,200 kWdc system projected to produce more than 6.8 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.

A second installation at 750 Governor Lea Road, rated at 3,300 kWdc, is expected to deliver more than 4.2 million kilowatt-hours per year.

The third, at 400 Ships Landing Way, comes in at 2,856.6 kWdc and is projected to generate more than 3.7 million kilowatt-hours annually.

Five additional properties across New Castle County will round out the portfolio alongside these three flagship sites. Together, the companies say, they represent one of Delaware's largest commitments to rooftop community solar.

Three Projects Enter Delaware's JobsFirst Permitting Accelerator

Momentum for the partnership picked up earlier in the month, when Governor Matt Meyer announced on October 9 that three of the portfolio's rooftop solar projects had been accepted into Delaware's JobsFirst Permitting Accelerator.

Those projects are located at Ships Landing Way, Lambson Lane, and Dock View Drive. Harvey Hanna credited the Governor's leadership in creating the initiative, which is intended to help advance energy projects and attract private investment to the state.

The announcement arrives at a time when Delaware is focused on expanding energy generation, strengthening the electric grid, and addressing rising energy costs.

By placing new generation on existing commercial properties, the Harvey Hanna and King Energy portfolio is positioned to contribute to those goals while broadening access to community solar for Delaware residents and businesses.

The program is also structured to extend clean energy access to low- and moderate-income households, allowing residents to participate in community solar even if they do not own a property with a suitable rooftop.

Measurable Contribution to the State's Renewable Portfolio Standard

Delaware imports a significant share of the electricity it consumes, even as state policy continues to push for growth in renewable generation.

Under the state's Renewable Portfolio Standard, utilities must source 40% of their energy from renewable resources by 2035. The Harvey Hanna and King Energy portfolio is projected to supply approximately 2.2% of the solar generation Delaware will need to satisfy that requirement.

John Witchel, CEO of King Energy, framed the collaboration as a product of the developer's foresight.

"Harvey Hanna has been a terrific partner because they recognized the opportunity that exists on their rooftops and took a long-term view of what those properties can contribute," Witchel said.

"By working together, we're able to turn existing commercial buildings into sources of clean energy while expanding access to community solar for Delaware residents."

Developer Points to Existing Building Stock as the Core Asset

For Harvey Hanna, the initiative builds on assets the company already holds.

Thomas Harvey, Managing Director of Harvey Hanna & Associates, said the partnership demonstrates a broader purpose for the firm's buildings.

"At Harvey Hanna, we believe our buildings can do more than simply provide space for businesses; they can also contribute to the communities around them," Harvey said.

"We have a significant portfolio of commercial rooftops, and this partnership with King Energy gives us an opportunity to put that existing infrastructure to work in a meaningful way. We're excited about the long-term environmental and community benefits this program can provide."

The company views the solar partnership as a further step in its stated commitment to responsible property ownership, innovation, and community investment across Delaware.

Delmarva Power Territory Interconnection Ahead

All eight projects sit within Delmarva Power's service territory and remain in development, with the installations expected to come online in the coming years. Harvey Hanna acknowledged Delmarva Power's ongoing engagement with the solar industry and its efforts to support the interconnection of renewable-energy projects.

The developer describes that engagement as an important element in expanding access to community solar and adding clean-energy generation to Delaware's electric grid.

The Companies Behind the Project

Harvey Hanna & Associates is a multidisciplinary real estate investment, development, and management firm focused on sustainable industrial, commercial, mixed-use, and hospitality properties.

The firm's current holdings include nearly 4 million square feet of industrial and commercial properties in Delaware and Maryland. Its hospitality portfolio comprises four internationally branded resort hotels, a boutique resort hotel, and award-winning restaurants.

HHA is currently developing over 1.6 million square feet of new industrial properties and a large-scale mixed-use community, while also expanding its resort hospitality holdings. Across the Delmarva Peninsula, HHA and its affiliate companies employ over 1,000 people.
