250 MW Free State Solar Project Sold by PNE to South African Independent Power Producer

PNE Group, a renewable energy developer headquartered in Hamburg, has divested a 250 MW solar photovoltaic project in South Africa's Free State province. The buyer is a major independent power producer based in South Africa.
Transaction announced from Cuxhaven
The company communicated the transaction from Cuxhaven on 2 November 2026, describing the South African market, where the group has built up substantial development activities, as dynamic.
The announcement contains no information on the financial terms of the deal, and the identity of the purchasing power producer was not revealed. What was made clear is that the buyer acquires a strategic, large-scale PV development at a planned nominal capacity of 250 MW.
PNE South Africa stays on board until Financial Close
The transfer of ownership does not end PNE's role in the project. Through its subsidiary PNE South Africa, the group will keep supporting the investor with project development services up to Financial Close.
According to the company, this keeps the expertise of the local team embedded in the project as it advances, even after the change of ownership. The arrangement follows a model in which the developer captures value at a completed development milestone while retaining a supporting function as the project matures toward its final investment decision. No timeline beyond that continuing support was disclosed, and the announcement offered no specifics on grid connection, offtake arrangements or construction plans.
Chief Operating Officer highlights value realisation
Roland Stanze, Chief Operating Officer of PNE AG, addressed both the commercial and operational dimensions of the sale. "With the sale of this strategic, large scale PV project we are continuing our successful project development activities in South Africa. The transaction demonstrates that our local teams are able to develop attractive projects in international growth markets and successfully market them.
At the same time, we remain involved in the project and contribute our expertise to its further development," he said. Stanze linked the deal to the group's wider project marketing approach, adding: "The transaction also underlines our ability to continuously realise value from our extensive project pipeline and to sell projects at the appropriate time." In his framing, projects built up by local teams are sold to investors at suitable stages, with development support continuing under PNE's guidance thereafter.
A Free State project within a large national pipeline
The project sits in the Free State, an inland province that hosts considerable solar development activity in South Africa. At 250 MW of planned nominal capacity, it ranks among utility-scale photovoltaic developments. The sale forms part of a substantially larger footprint.
As of June 2026, PNE Group's project pipeline in South Africa stood at around 2,000 MW of photovoltaic capacity alongside around 2,800 MW of wind energy capacity, a combined total of roughly 4,800 MW. Against that figure, the divested Free State project accounts for about an eighth of the group's South African PV pipeline as recorded at mid-2026.
The company identifies South Africa as an important international market and an important international pillar of its project development business. It characterises the market as dynamic, and the repeated conclusion of project sales there points to an ongoing commercial rhythm in the group's development activity.
Part of a series of sales in the country
This is not an isolated transaction. The company's own announcement was headlined "PNE sells another photovoltaic project in South Africa", wording that signals prior completed sales of PV projects in the country, with the Free State project following in that series.
Three elements together shape PNE's positioning in the South African market: an extensive pipeline, a local development organisation in the form of PNE South Africa, and a stated capability to sell projects at the right moment. The latest sale adds to that record, and the nature of the buyer, an independent power producer domiciled in South Africa itself, points to domestic demand for developed renewable energy projects in the country.
What the deal means going forward
For the acquiring power producer, the transaction brings a strategic, large-scale PV project into its portfolio, backed by continued development expertise from PNE South Africa through the remaining stages of preparation. For PNE, the sale confirms that its model, developing projects with local teams, marketing them to investors and independent power producers, and remaining involved through development support until Financial Close, is being applied repeatedly.
Management has indicated that value realisation from the extensive project pipeline is an ongoing capability rather than a one-off event. With South Africa standing as one of PNE's significant international development markets, that approach is set to continue shaping the group's activities in the country.
